Oral hygiene after implants, zirconia and veneers: choosing the right toothpaste and brush
Which toothpaste and toothbrush help implants, zirconia crowns and veneers stay beautiful for longer? About abrasivity (RDA), fluoride and whitening toothpastes.
· 4 min read

Once aesthetic treatment is finished, the most common question is: “How should I look after my teeth now?” For your smile to stay beautiful for a long time, correct daily hygiene is just as important as the treatment itself.
Why is extra care needed?
The surfaces of implants, zirconia crowns and ceramic veneers are polished. This polish provides both an aesthetic look and less plaque build-up. The wrong products can scratch the surface over time and reduce its shine.
In addition, the natural teeth and gums around the restorations also need protection.
What to look for in a toothpaste
1. Low abrasivity (RDA)
RDA is a measure of how abrasive a toothpaste is. To protect polished zirconia and aesthetic restorations, it is best to avoid highly abrasive toothpastes.
2. Fluoride
Fluoride helps prevent decay in natural teeth and strengthens enamel. Decay does not develop in the implant itself, but fluoride is beneficial for the other natural teeth in your mouth.
3. Whitening toothpastes
Whitening toothpastes can reduce surface stains, but their composition and abrasivity matter. Highly abrasive whitening pastes should be chosen with care to avoid scratching the surface.
4. Sensitivity and gums
Choose a toothpaste that does not irritate the soft tissues and is suitable for daily use. If you have gum problems, a professional examination is important as well as the right toothpaste.
Toothbrush and other tools
- Soft-bristled toothbrush — protects restorations and gums;
- interdental brush — especially for cleaning under implants and bridges;
- dental floss — for the spaces between teeth;
- if you use an electric toothbrush, you can choose a sensitive mode.
Daily routine
- Brush twice a day for about two minutes;
- clean between your teeth at least once a day;
- avoid biting hard objects;
- if you clench your teeth at night, tell your dentist;
- have regular dental check-ups.
Remember
Healthy teeth depend not only on toothpaste, but also on correct brushing technique, daily oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a whitening toothpaste with veneers?
Whitening toothpaste does not change the colour of ceramic veneers, and highly abrasive pastes can damage the surface. Discuss your choice of toothpaste with your dentist.
What should I do if the gum around an implant bleeds?
This may be related to gum inflammation. See your dentist without delay.
